Grammar Rules

Rule 1: Explaining symptoms to a doctor

Structure: Plain form + んです / N + なんです / ナA + なんです

This expression explains the situation to the other person. It is used to describe symptoms to the doctor at the hospital. The form becomes ~なんです when connecting to nouns and ナ-adjectives.

How to use: Attach んです to the plain form. Nouns and ナ-adjectives take なんです. Verbs take the dictionary-form, タ-form, or ナイ-form: はきけ が する ん です, 足あし を くじいた ん です, せき が とまらない ん です. The doctor asks どう しました か?, and when concerned that someone looks different from usual, ask どう した ん です か?.
💡 Pro Tip: んです adds an explanatory tone; it is not just a polite ending. Use ん です か? to ask for a reason and ん です to give one. Register: ん です is polite; ん だ is casual.

💡 Pro Tip: This is the negative counterpart of V-てください. Do not say 会あいない で ください; use the ナイ-form 会あわない で ください. Register: ~ない で ください is polite; ~ない で is casual.
