Grammar Rules

Rule 1: ～歳 (～さい)

Structure: Number + 歳

Used to express age. 歳 (sai) is the counter for years of age. Always comes after the number.

Example

わたしはにじゅうさいです。

Watashi wa nijuu-sai desu.

→ I am 20 years old.

Rule 2: Introduction with こちらは

Structure: こちらは + Name/Relationship + です

こちらは is a polite way to say 'this is' when introducing someone. More formal than これは.

Example

こちらはわたしのははです。

Kochira wa watashi no haha desu.

→ This is my mother.

Rule 3: Possessive の

Structure: Person + の + Noun

The particle の shows possession or relationship, similar to 's or 'of' in English.

Example

わたしのあに

Watashi no ani

→ my elder brother

Rule 4: Asking age with いくつ or なんさい

Structure: いくつですか？ or なんさいですか？

いくつですか？ is a polite way to ask 'how old?' なんさいですか？ is more direct but still polite. Use おいくつですか？ for very polite situations.

おこさんはいくつですか？

O-ko-san wa ikutsu desu ka?

→ How old is your child?
