Grammar Rules

Rule 1: Past Tense - ました Form

Structure: Verb stem + ました

Use this form to talk about past actions. Change verbs from ます form to ました form for past tense.

Example

えいがをみました。

Eiga o mimashita.

→ I watched a movie.

Rule 2: Past Tense Adjectives

Structure: Adjective + かったです (い-adjectives) / でした (な-adjectives)

For い-adjectives, remove い and add かったです. For な-adjectives, add でした.

Example

えいがはおもしろかったです。

Eiga wa omoshirokatta desu.

→ The movie was interesting.

Rule 3: に - Purpose of Movement

Structure: Place + に + Verb of movement

に indicates the purpose or destination of movement when followed by verbs like いきます、きます、かえります.

Example

えいがにいきました。

Eiga ni ikimashita.

→ I went to a movie.

Rule 4: と - With

Structure: Person + と

と means 'with' when indicating who you did something with.

Example

ともだちといきました。

Tomodachi to ikimashita.

→ I went with friends.

Rule 5: で - Location of Action

Structure: Place + で + Action

で indicates where an action takes place.
