About Japanese Verb Groups
Godan Verbs (Group 1)
Also known as う-verbs or consonant-stem verbs. These verbs conjugate through all five vowel sounds.
- End in -う, -く, -ぐ, -す, -つ, -ぬ, -ぶ, -む, -る
- Example: かく (to write), のむ (to drink)
- Most common verb type
Ichidan Verbs (Group 2)
Also known as る-verbs or vowel-stem verbs. These verbs are more regular in conjugation.
- End in -る (preceded by -i or -e sound)
- Example: たべる (to eat), みる (to see)
- Remove -る and add endings
Irregular Verbs (Group 3)
Only two main irregular verbs plus する verbs (suru verbs).
- する (to do) and くる (to come)
- Compound verbs ending with する
- Must be memorized individually
